Senior Director, State and Local Government Affairs
The Nuclear Energy Institute is currently seeking an experienced senior director to implement the Institute’s state and local government affairs programs in coordination with the Institute’s members.
This position is responsible for managing NEI’s staff responsible for state and local programs, maintaining strong relations with state and local elected officials and their associations, and demonstrating measurable success in effectively advocating on behalf of NEI’s priorities. This position will represent Institute positions before state and local elected officials at conferences, seminars, and other events. Furthermore, he or she will assist with the Institute’s strategic planning process with analysis of key trends in energy and environmental policy, and critical assessment of industry needs and performance trends. The senior director must develop and implement strategies for maximizing the effectiveness of combined NEI governmental affairs and communications programs as well as assist Institute members, as requested, to develop effective state and local political and grassroots campaigns.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business-related field, with a Master’s degree preferred. In addition to educational requirements, the incumbent must have a minimum 10 years of experience in the nuclear industry, or in comparable advocacy positions. He or she must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, have strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills, and the ability to interact with individuals at multiple organizational levels, especially senior executive levels.
The incumbent must possess comprehensive knowledge of the nuclear energy industry and the electric utility industry as well as a broad knowledge of the Institute’s issues and organizational structure, including governance, policies and membership. Additionally, he or she should have knowledge of and experience in designing and implementing successful combined political and communications strategies and tactics at national and state levels.
