Senior Project Manager, Used Fuel Programs

The Nuclear Energy Institute is currently seeking a project manager to develop and carry out programs to achieve the used nuclear fuel management system operations goals of the nuclear energy industry, including waste acceptance, storage, and transportation.

This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to advance NEI goals in the areas of used nuclear fuel acceptance, storage, transportation, and other used nuclear management system operational matters. Strategies include programmatic (including budget, cost, schedule), legal, regulatory, technical issues, and related public information and political activities. This position will lead industry task forces focused on the accomplishment of these goals and contribute to proposed legislative, institutional and communications vehicles regarding used nuclear fuel acceptance, storage, transportation and other operational matters. Furthermore, he or she will maintain up-to-date awareness of the federal and commercial used nuclear fuel programs as well as provide guidance to technical consultants and outside counsel (along with NEI General Counsel), assisting on all used nuclear fuel issues. This position will follow closely the guidance provided by the NEI Board, Executive Committee, Integrated Used Nuclear Fuel Working Group, and NEI management and executive leadership.

The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a field related to used nuclear fuel management system operations (engineering, sciences, etc.), with a Master’s degree or higher in a related field and/or management preferred. In addition to educational requirements, the incumbent must have a minimum 10 years of experience related to used nuclear fuel management system operations. Direct experience in NRC licensing, cask certification, use of casks, planning shipments, and application of DOT and NRC rules for shipment is a must. Experience with electric utility or nuclear industry is essential.   Large nuclear project experience would be useful.

The senior project manager will have complete knowledge of technical, legal, regulatory, operational, policy and institutional aspects of used nuclear fuel management systems operation and an ability to integrate these aspects is essential. Knowledge of federal commercial used nuclear fuel programs would be useful. The incumbent must possess excellent leadership, managerial, administrative, advocacy, coordination, organizational, and interpersonal skills. He or she also must be able to anticipate consequences of actions, statements, etc. and be able to strike a balance among the conflicting demands of the different points-of-view in the industry.
