+ About the Conference & Who Should Attend

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) periodically sponsors a national examination writer’s workshop and the next workshop will be held on January 7 and 8, 2014, at the Tampa Intercontinental Hotel.  The expected workshop attendees are individuals from nuclear power plant utilities across the country involved with preparation of examinations to satisfy the 10 CFR Part 55 requirements for operator licenses.  Site Training Directors/Managers, Operations Training Managers/Supervisors and others involved with the oversight, review, approval and administration of regulatory examinations for licensed operators and candidates are also encouraged to attend.  It is also anticipated that representatives from all four NRC regions and headquarters operator licensing staff will participate.  Through broad participation, it is expected that the workshop will serve as a forum to discuss challenges and experiences related to operator licensing examination development in a way that fosters consistent administration of the program across the nation.  The major topics of focus for this conference will be:

  • Multiple choice examination question attributes and development
  • Senior Reactor Operator level question development
  • Operating test development (simulator scenarios and walk-throughs)
  • Experience requirements for license candidates
  • Progress update on the Knowledge and Ability Catalog upgrade project
  • NRC efforts to enhance consistency of the operator licensing process across the regions
  • Upcoming enhancements/changes to NUREG 1021, “Operator Licensing Examination Standards for Power Reactors”
