Economic Benefits of New Nuclear Facilities

Nuclear plants are expanding the U.S. economy
through direct spending in local communities and in
tax payments to federal, state and local governments, which benefit local infrastructure such as schools. Building new nuclear plants will create thousands of new, high-paying jobs for Americans and prepare the nation for a clean energy future.

Contributions of the Typical Nuclear Plant
  • employs up to 3,500 people during construction
  • employs 400 to 700 people long-term at salaries typically 36 percent higher than average salaries in the local area
  • produces approximately $470 million annually in sales of goods and services in the local community
  • provides annual state and local tax revenue of more than $16 million, which benefits schools, roads and other state and local infrastructure
  • provides annual federal tax payments of $67 million
  • stimulates the U.S. supply chain through purchases of commodities like steel, concrete and thousands of electrical components
  • generates the lowest cost electricity among other major U.S. energy sources, such as coal, natural gas and petroleum.
