Status of Used Nuclear Fuel Storage at US Commercial Nuclear Plants

July 2013

This list gives the year in which commercial nuclear plants in the United States plan to augment storage space in the steel-lined, concrete pools that hold used fuel assemblies on-site upon removal from the reactor. To augment pools’ capacity, used fuel is placed in dry cask storage, where it is held in massive airtight canisters made from steel and concrete as approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

For information on the quantities and locations of stored used fuel at shutdown reactors, see the NEI fact sheet Used Nuclear Fuel in Storage at Shutdown Reactors.
