Status of Used Nuclear Fuel Storage at US Commercial Nuclear Plants

This list gives the year in which commercial nuclear plants in the United Statse plan to augment storage space in the steel-lined concrete pools that hold used nuclear fuel assemblies on-site upon removal from the reactor.

November 2011 This list gives the year in which commercial nuclear plants in the United Statse plan to augment storage space in the steel-lined concrete pools that hold used nuclear fuel assemblies on-site upon removal from the reactor. To augment pools' capacity, used fuel is placed in dry cask storage, where it is held in massive airtight canisters made from steel and concrete as approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
