Nuclear Energy Institute Re-Elects Nye Chairman, Adds Four New Members to Board of Directors

WASHINGTON—The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has re-elected the chairman and vice chairman of its board of directors for additional one-year terms. The chairman of the NEI board of directors is Erle Nye, chairman and chief executive at TXU. Christian H. Poindexter, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer at Constellation Energy Group Inc., was re-elected vice chairman of the board.

NEI also added four new members to its 60-member board of directors, and re-elected seven members for an additional term. The newly elected members of the board are William A. Ehmig , vice president, professional affairs, Nycomed Amersham; and George D. Turner , president and chief executive officer, American Nuclear Insurers.

Two individuals were elected to complete terms of retiring members: Jerome P. Kane , vice president and director of nuclear operations, Stone and Webster; and James N. Nordahl , senior vice president and general manager, Siemens Power Corp.

Re-elected to the board for an additional term were:

  • Michael F. Barnoski, president, ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Power;
  • Jeffrey R. Holzschuh, managing director, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter;
  • Michael A. McMurphy, president and chief executive officer, COGEMA Inc.;
  • Charles W. Pryor Jr., president and chief executive officer, Westinghouse Electric Co.;
  • Steven R. Specker, president, GE Nuclear Energy;
  • William H. Timbers Jr., president and chief executive officer, USEC Inc.; and
  • Paul L. Wattelet, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Sargent & Lundy.

The NEI board of directors includes representatives from each of the 42 electric utilities that own and operate nuclear power plants, and other companies involved in nuclear technologies.

Newly elected members of NEI's Executive Committee, which sets broad policy for the industry, are: William T. Cottle , president and chief executive officer, STP Nuclear Operating Co.; and Charles W. Pryor Jr. of Westinghouse Electric Co.

Re-elected to the Executive Committee Craven Crowell , chairman, Tennessee Valley Authority; W. George Hairston III , president and chief executive officer, Southern Nuclear Operating Co.; Donald C. Hintz , president and chief executive officer, Entergy Corp.; and John W. Rowe , chairman, president and chief executive officer, Commonwealth Edison Co.

The newly elected and re-elected members join the Executive Committee's current members:
 

  • William Cavanaugh III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Carolina Power & Light Co.;
  • Joe F. Colvin, president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute;
  • Anthony F. Earley Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer, DTE Energy Co.;
  • William F. Hecht, chairman, president and chief executive officer, PP&L Resources Inc.;
  • Corbin A. McNeill Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer, PECO Energy Co.;
  • Michael G. Morris, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Northeast Utilities;
  • Erle Nye of TXU;
  • Christian H. Poindexter of Constellation Energy Group Inc.; and
  • William H. Timbers Jr. of USEC Inc.

Along with Nye and Poindexter, the following NEI officers were re-elected:

  • Joe F. Colvin, president and chief executive officer;
  • Ralph E. Beedle, Marvin S. Fertel and Angelina S. Howard, senior vice presidents;
  • Robert W. Bishop, Theodore J. Garrish and John E. Kane, vice presidents; and
  • Robert W. Bishop, secretary and treasurer.
