WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved the nomination of Peter B. Lyons as assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. Following is a statement from Marvin Fertel, the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer.
“The nuclear energy industry congratulates Dr. Lyons on his confirmation and applauds the Senate for acting expeditiously on this nomination.
“Few issues are as vital to our nation’s security and its environmental and economic well-being as energy. Because nuclear energy is a vital component of our nation’s energy portfolio—and the largest component of our low-carbon electricity production—the nation will be well served by having an individual of Pete Lyons’ knowledge, capability and integrity in the office of assistant secretary.
“Throughout his career, Pete has always advocated the highest standards for safe operation of the nation’s commercial nuclear plants. The nuclear energy industry looks forward to working with him to help enhance national security, drive economic growth and keep energy prices affordable.”
