WASHINGTON—The following is a statement by Marvin S. Fertel, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer at the Nuclear Energy Institute, on the White House’s designation of Nils J. Diaz as chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
“Nils Diaz brings a wealth of expertise as well as technical and management capability as chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
“He has extensive experience in many facets of the nuclear technologies, including serving as an engineer, working with space applications of nuclear technology and as a professor at the University of Florida. This experience will serve him well given the broad and expanding use of nuclear technologies in our society.
“The industry looks forward to working with Chairman Diaz and the NRC commissioners to continue to implement a forward looking regulatory system that focuses on those areas most important to safety, security and excellence in nuclear facility performance. Chairman Diaz has been a leader in these areas and in the NRC’s commitment to communicate these programs to the public.”
