Disposal of Low-Level Radioactive Waste

Safe Waste Disposal for Tomorrow
Society derives benefits from the materials and processes that generate low-level radioactive waste. The management and disposal of this waste is neither a technical nor a scientific problem. The government has established strict regulatory standards to control radiation levels at these facilities and protect the public. Modern technology can detect and monitor radiation—even the smallest amounts—to make sure it stays safely controlled. And with modern disposal methods, waste can be safely isolated from the public and the environment until it is no longer a hazard.

Disposal facility siting has become a political problem in some areas. It is the announced strategy of some anti-nuclear groups to prevent the siting of any low-level waste disposal facilities, and small but vocal groups have delayed the siting of some facilities as a tactic to shut down nuclear power plants.

After two decades of efforts to gain political support for privately operated disposal in Texas, legislation was enacted designating a geographic area in the state for a low-level waste disposal facility, and the state regulator has put in place a license application process. A company has filed a license application to develop a disposal site near Andrews, Texas.

The prospect that such a facility might be licensed and national access to that facility granted provides another option for addressing possible disposal capacity shortages that might result from future restrictions on Barnwell access.

Finally, a settlement has been reached between the Central Compact and Nebraska over damages resulting when the state reneged on its obligations to be the host state for the compact. This represents an important precedent that may encourage disposal facility development in states where such obligations exist. The parties to this settlement have also advanced a proposal to Texas to use the proposed facility.

Meanwhile, private firms that specialize in the treatment and storage of low-level nuclear waste are meeting the industry’s need for safe, cost-effective waste management options.
