WASHINGTON—The Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer, Frank L. “Skip” Bowman, today made the following comments regarding the renewable energy standard that is included in H.R. 6, the House of Representatives’ energy legislation passed today.
“The House of Representatives missed an opportunity to further America’s energy and environmental goals when it omitted nuclear energy from the renewable electricity standard in H.R. 6. Nuclear power plants are the only expandable, carbon-free baseload electricity source today, and they could play a significant role in the states’ efforts to meet existing electricity portfolio standards. The standard as passed in H.R. 6 is not equitable for all states, regardless of energy alternatives that have been designated for inclusion in the RES.
“The nuclear energy industry will continue to work with the Senate to include provisions that expand the use of nuclear energy to meet America’s growing electricity demand in a way that protects our air quality.”
