World Energy Congress
Sydney, Australia
September 8, 2004
Good Morning/Afternoon!
I am honored to be part of this World Energy Congress.
How fortunate we are to convene here in Sydney … this city of vibrant business, cultural and recreational pursuits ... a remarkable product of the modern, industrialized world.
Who wouldn’t be inspired by the energy and vision of this great city?
But the focus of my remarks today is not just on the qualities of our host city ... with its 4 million residents so fortunate to live here.
I want to discuss other issues. In fact, in keeping with the theme of this session ... I have other imperatives to address ... imperatives that concern not just Sydney, but the rest of our planet’s 6 billion inhabitants.
Because we who are assembled here today enjoy the finest that modern technology has to offer—clean water, healthy air to breathe and electricity, lighting our way, cooling us in the summer heat and comforting us against the chill of winter.
But I pose a question to you: What about the rest of us on planet earth?
And what about accessibility to electricity worldwide ... that energy so vital to economic growth ... for manufacturing ... for irrigating fields ... that energy needed to move and purify our water ... that energy so critical to building lives?
