State of the Industry Address
Nuclear Energy Assembly
Washington, D.C.
May 17, 2005
Remarks as prepared for delivery
Good morning. It’s a pleasure for me to be here.
Each year at this meeting, NEI’s chairman presents the state of the industry address. As vice chairman of NEI, and chairman of the Nominating Committee, I am pleased to announce that, yesterday, the Executive Committee elected Tony Earley as chairman of NEI. And Tony, as most of you know, is chairman and CEO of DTE Energy.
Unfortunately, DTE’s Board meeting is today, so Tony is not here. But it is my honor to represent NEI in describing the state of our industry today.
This is a time of enormous opportunity for our industry. And I know you’re probably thinking, here we go again, yet another declaration of “the nuclear renaissance.” Well, you’re partly right. It’s far too soon to celebrate a rebirth...but the time has never been better to seize the opportunity to make it happen.
Our industry has been building momentum over the past few years thanks to superb plant performance...enlightened regulatory changes...hard, steady work by the industry and federal government...and growing awareness of nuclear energy’s role in improving the environment and energy security.
As we discussed at last year’s NEA, we have kept our eye on the day-to-day matters essential to safe, reliable plant operation...while implementing long-term strategies within our companies and across our industry.
