NEI Luncheon
2005 NRC Regulatory Information Conference

Rockville, Maryland
March 9, 2005

Remarks as prepared for delivery

Introduction
Good afternoon. Thank you for joining me today for NEI’s annual luncheon at the Regulatory Information Conference.

A few months ago, I joined NEI as president and CEO after serving for nearly four decades in the U.S. Navy, the last eight years as director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Some of you may have heard me say this before, but the primary reason I sought this job at NEI is that I firmly believe our energy security is inextricably linked to our country’s national security.

I see nuclear energy at the heart of our energy security. I see my new responsibilities as a natural continuation of my service in the Navy. And I see you in this room, although with different responsibilities, making immense contributions to our national security.

So, I’m gratified to have this opportunity today to talk about the importance of continuing the fundamentally positive industry and regulatory agency interaction. This interaction is crucial to ensure that we maximize safe electricity production from today’s 103 reactors and test the licensing processes for siting and construction of next-generation reactors.
