Energy for Life Blood Drive 2001 Collects More Than 5,000 Units

WASHINGTON—The nuclear industry and its employees contributed a different kind of energy to their communities throughout the United States during the Energy for Life Nuclear Energy Blood Drive. The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), in conjunction with America's Blood Centers and the American Red Cross, sponsored Energy for Life blood drives before the July 4th holiday at 39 nuclear-related organizations across the nation, collecting more than 5,000 units of blood.

"Just as energy is needed to operate the lights we need to see and to power the machines we use, especially those in a hospital, blood is needed by more than 4.5 million Americans who receive life-saving transfusions every year," said Jeanne Dariotis, President, America's Blood Centers. "America's Blood Centers' national network of community-based blood centers is proud to partner with the Nuclear Energy Institute and its member companies to provide a much-needed boost of energy and blood to cancer patients, transplant recipients and to victims of accidents. NEI is setting the bar for week-long corporate blood drive programs, which we hope others will emulate," Ms.
Dariotis said.

During this second annual Energy for Life blood drive, nuclear-related organizations collected blood at 65 different sites throughout the country. The 5,000 plus units of blood collected, a fivefold increase from a year ago, represent a significant contribution toward preventing severe blood shortages during the period of low supply around the July 4th holiday. Energy for Life Nuclear Energy Blood Drive Week 2002 will be held June 24-28, 2002.
