Emergency Preparedness and Communication Forum: June 9-10

The forum will allow open exchange on issues of interest to the emergency preparedness community. The forum will provide an opportunity to compare how companies are implementing the various aspects of their programs, including successes or difficulties they may be experiencing.

You will hear updates on:
  • Nuclear Energy Institute and Institute of Nuclear Power Operations activities
  • Emerging issues
  • Regulatory activities at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency
  • Emergency preparedness/security exercise initiatives and lessons learned
  • Real-events lessons learned
  • Inspection insights
  • Outreach and public confidence
  • Communication issues and new challenges.
Who should attend?
Directors; managers; supervisors and project managers of on-site and off-site emergency preparedness programs; emergency preparedness trainers; quality assurance specialists; public information and communications specialists; alert and notification specialists.
Conference Details:
  • Conference registration will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, June 9, outside the Dana Ballroom of the Laguna Cliffs Marriott. You may pick up your badge and meeting materials at registration. Registration will remain open at this location during forum hours.
  • SONGS and NEI will host a Hawaiian Luau at the hotel on Monday, June 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. that will include dinner and cocktails. One guest will be complimentary. There will be a fee of $75 for each additional guest age 12 and over. Hawaiian attire is appropriate for this event.
  • Continental breakfast will be available at 7 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Lunch will be provided on Monday and Tuesday.
  • The forum will begin at 8 a.m. Monday and adjourn on Tuesday by 5 p.m.
  • To receive messages during conference hours, tell callers to dial the main hotel telephone number, 949.661.5000, and ask to be transferred to NEI’s Emergency Preparedness and Communication Forum registration desk.
  • Conference cancellations must be made by May 19 to receive a refund of the registration fee; however, substitutions always are accepted.
  • Casual attire is appropriate for this forum.

Emergency Preparedness Training Course: June 11-13

Following the Emergency Preparedness and Communication Forum, NEI will conduct an Emergency Preparedness Training Course. The two-and-a-half-day curriculum includes lesson plans and open discussion with industry experts. The course is limited to 50 students.

Training topics include:
  • Emergency preparedness regulations
  • Drills and exercises
  • Emergency preparedness training requirements
  • Emergency preparedness program maintenance
  • Emergency response facilities
  • Emergency response communications.
Who should attend?
Newcomers to emergency preparedness; emergency preparedness supervisors/managers; both on-site and off-site emergency preparedness licensing specialists; emergency preparedness trainers; quality assurance specialists; communications specialists; scenario writers.
Training Details:
  • Emergency preparedness training course registration will begin at noon on Wednesday, June 11, and remain open during course hours.
  • The training course will be held in the Pacific Learning Center.
  • Continental breakfast will be available one hour prior to the start of the morning sessions on Thursday and Friday.
  • Lunch will be served on Thursday only.
  • The course will adjourn at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 13.
  • Casual attire is appropriate for this course.

Emergency Preparedness Regional RUG Chairs and Fleet Representatives:
June 11, 2008, 8 - 10 a.m.

The purpose of this session is to bring together the EP managers to discuss issues related to industry direction and philosophy. It also will serve as a forum for the EP managers to discuss high-level issues and will provide an opportunity to establish or reinforce the leadership role that all EP managers should fulfill.

The meeting rate of $199 per night single or double occupancy will not last long. (Monday through Wednesday nights may already be $299.) All room rates are subject to the current occupancy tax.

After May 12, 2008 room availability and rates will be at the hotel's discretion. Call the Laguna Cliffs Marriott at 949.661.5000 as soon as possible and identify yourself as an attendee of NEI's Emergency Preparedness and Communication meeting. Reservations must be guaranteed with a deposit in the amount of the first night's room and tax. This deposit is non-refundable unless reservation is canceled 72 hours prior to arrival.

Location
The Laguna Cliffs Marriott overlooks the Dana Point harbor, just steps away from the Pacific Ocean’s beaches. The hotel is located 26 miles or 30 minutes from John Wayne Orange County Airport and midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Disneyland, Legoland, Knott’s Berry Farm and numerous other Southern California attractions are just a short drive away.

Travel From Airport
  • A taxi from John Wayne Orange County Airport will cost approximately $65.
  • Shuttle service is available through SuperShuttle for $29 per person each way. Exit John Wayne Orange County Airport from baggage claim and take the crosswalk to the ground transportation island. Look for a SuperShuttle representative wearing a blue jacket. Vans depart as needed; maximum wait time is 30 minutes. Reservations are only needed for travel from the hotel to the airport. Return arrangements can be made through the hotel concierge or by calling 1-800-BLUEVAN or www.supershuttle.com.

Take 405 Freeway South, which merges into 5 Freeway South. Traveling past Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, exit at Pacific Coast Highway to the north (right). Proceed two sets of stoplights to Dana Point Harbor Drive and turn left. Proceed a short block and turn right onto Street of the Park Lantern. Proceed to the top of the hill and enter the resort's property.

From LAX:

Proceed two sets of stoplights to Dana Point Harbor Drive and turn left. Proceed a short block to Street of the Park Lantern and turn right. Proceed to the top of the hill and enter the resort's property.
