NEI International Uranium Fuel Seminar
The Westin Tabor Center
Denver, Colorado
October 19-22, 2008
Denver, Colorado is an enticing blend of outdoor adventure and urban sophistication. Snow capped peaks provide a contrast to the sunny streets of a thriving downtown. Rock climbers, engineers, lawyers and a vast array of professionals make Denver their home with its refined style yet relaxed atmosphere. Also, Denver is home to the main office of ConverDyn, a general partnership between the affiliates of Honeywell and General Atomics. ConverDyn is the exclusive agent for conversion sales from Honeywell’s Metropolis Works facility in Illinois. NEI expresses its gratitude to ConverDyn for hosting both the Sunday opening reception and Monday special event.
In addition, Denver is home to Cameco Resources which has for many years been the largest U.S. uranium producer from nearby operations in Wyoming and Nebraska. Cameco Resources is also deploying its expertise at the Inkai Operation in Kazakhstan. NEI also expresses its gratitude to Cameco for hosting the technical tour to a Wyoming In-Situ Recovery operation at the conclusion of the seminar. See details below.
Finally, Colorado is also home to several uranium deposits and will continue to attract uranium exploration and mining activity.
Aggressive reactor construction programs in Asia, Russia and North America, declining availability of secondary fuel supplies, exhaustion of utility fuel inventories and persistence of restrictive government policies on uranium trade will dramatically increase the demand for nuclear fuel. The significant increase in uranium prices since the early 1990s has prompted worldwide exploration by hundreds of junior mining companies. The entry of investment funds into the fuel market has driven the uranium market price even higher than might be justified by the projected supply-demand imbalance. Decades of lack of investment in front-end activities (mining, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication) may cloud long-term supply availability for years, especially as the lead times for development of new mines may exceed those for new-reactor licensing and construction.
NEI’s International Uranium Fuel Seminar 2008 will examine the changing international fuel market, explore future needs and provide a forum to examine challenges facing the fuel industry. Distinguished speakers from foreign and U.S. industry and governments will provide perspectives on these critical policy issues.
