Lessons Learned: World Outages
Arlington, VA
June 3-4, 2008
Who Should Attend
- Project managers and supervisors with responsibility for primary system dissimilar metal butt weld inspection and mitigation, reactor vessel head nozzle examinations and repairs, and ASME Code repairs and replacements.
- Engineering personnel with responsibility for preparation of associated engineering packages and ASME Code relief requests.
- Senior managers with outage and modification work oversight.
Why Attend
Issuance and implementation of MRP-139, “Primary System Butt Weld Inspection and Evaluation Guideline,” has caused a substantial increase in inspection and mitigation activities associated with primary system dissimilar metal butt welds. Numerous challenges to the successful completion of these activities arose in the fall 2006 outage season, but plants demonstrated better success during 2007 outages. The purpose of this conference is to present information on lessons learned and good practices related to:- project management of the inspection and mitigation campaigns
- performance of weld overlays
- performance of non-destructive examinations of the overlay
- evaluation of inspection results
- preparation of the ASME Code relief requests and the associated regulatory interface
- industry's response to the generic aspects of inspection findings
- reactor vessel head inspection/repairs
- other significant outage repair experience.
Key points to review will be:
- safety awareness and expectations
- weld process development
- focused equipment
- ALARA
- planning
- mockup fidelity
- team training
- human performance improvements
- field issues.
Utility personnel involved in these activities and associated vendors will offer their views on various outage issues. NEI also has invited the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to provide their regulatory perspective. These presentations will focus on supervisory and engineering aspects as opposed to technician and craft activities.
The objective of the conference is to provide information to those planning and supervising these activities in future outages to facilitate more efficient performance.
