Marvin S. Fertel Elected Senior Vice President at the Nuclear Energy Institute

Marvin S. Fertel has been elected senior vice president of Nuclear Infrastructure, Support & International Programs at the Nuclear Energy Institute.

Fertel is responsible for managing NEI's activities related to the storage and disposal of commercial used nuclear fuel by the U.S. government. His division also is responsible for promoting policies that achieve a long-term reliable and economic supply of nuclear fuel. Fertel also is responsible for NEI's programs that support its supplier and architect-engineer members and for developing policies and programs that enhance those supplier's ability to compete in world markets.

Fertel also directs NEI's international activities, including interactions with international nuclear organizations, governmental entities and policies affecting commercial nuclear commerce.

Fertel had been vice president with the same areas of responsibility for NEI, the nuclear energy industry's Washington-based policy organization. He joined the U.S. Council for Energy Awareness—one of NEI's predecessor organizations—in 1990 as vice president of technical programs.

"Marvin Fertel has played a key role in helping the industry achieve its goals and advance many important initiatives, most recently, with his efforts to encourage nuclear energy cooperation between the United States and China," said Joe F. Colvin, NEI's president and chief executive officer. "His extensive industry experience, combined with his outstanding leadership skills, will help the industry meet the challenges facing the electricity business in an era of great change."

Fertel's experience includes more than 30 years consulting on issues related to designing, siting, licensing and management of both fossil-fueled and nuclear power plants. He has held executive-level positions with Ebasco, Management Analysis Company, Delian, and Tenera.

Mr. Fertel holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University, Boston; a master of science in civil engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Technology, New York; and has participated in the doctorate of public administration program at New York University.

A resident of Chantilly, Va., Fertel and his wife, Susan, have a son, Adam.
