June 24 Media Briefing in Los Angeles

WASHINGTON—The U.S. nuclear energy industry is nearing completion of a two-year program to prepare its 103 nuclear power plants to safely generate electricity at the start of the year 2000.

On June 24, the executive in charge of the nuclear energy industry's Y2K readiness initiative will report on its progress on a coordinated, comprehensive approach to assuring continued safe operation of the nuclear power plants that meet one-fifth of the United States' electricity needs. The manager responsible for Southern California Edison Company's Y2K readiness program will detail the company's efforts to ready its nuclear plants for the December 31 date change.
