Nuclear Industry Commends Meserve As ‘Capable, Effective’ NRC Chairman

WASHINGTON—The following is a statement from the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer, Joe F. Colvin, in response to today’s announcement that Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard Meserve will leave the agency at the end of March 2003 to assume the presidency of the Carnegie Institution.

“Dr. Meserve has served capably and effectively as chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Carnegie Institution can look forward to the arrival of a proven leader under whose guidance the NRC has remained true to its protective mission with a focus on more efficient, safety-focused regulation.

“All the more so, as the result of the tragic terrorist attacks on our nation, I have had extensive discussion with Dr. Meserve as the industry and the NRC have worked cooperatively to bolster the robust security posture at nuclear power plants. He has always exhibited the utmost professionalism, an openness to hear the views of all stakeholders, and a determination to have his agency remain a credible, impartial and effective protector of public health and safety.

“We wish him and his family well as he embarks on a new career challenge.”
