Nuclear Energy Institute Elects Nye Chairman, Adds New Member to Board of Directors
SAN FRANCISCO—The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has elected a new chairman and vice chairman of its board of directors. The new chairman of the NEI board of directors is Erle Nye, chairman and chief executive officer at Texas Utilities Company. He succeeds James J. Howard, the chairman, president and chief executive office of Northern States Power Co., who has served as NEI chairman for three years.
Christian H. Poindexter, chairman of the board and chief executive officer at Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., was elected vice chairman of the NEI board.
NEI also added one new member to its board, and re-elected five members for an additional term. The newly elected member of the board is Kennon G. Hess, president, nuclear power, Bechtel Power Corp.
Re-elected to the board for an additional term were:
John R. Bohart
, president and chief executive officer of Framatome Technologies Inc.;
Jack Edlow
, president of Edlow International;
Charles W. Pryor Jr
., president, energy systems, at Westinghouse Electric Co.;
R. Baird Stephenson
, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Power Corp.; and
Edward J. Walsh
, group president, power and government, at Stone & Webster.
These executives join the 60-member NEI board of directors, which includes representatives from each of the 43 electric utilities that own and operate nuclear power plants and other companies involved in nuclear technologies.
Newly elected members of NEI's Executive Committee, which sets broad policy for the industry, are:
Anthony F. Earley
, president and chief operating officer of The Detroit Edison Co.;
Michael G. Morris
, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Northeast Utilities; and
William H. Timbers Jr
., president and chief executive officer of United States Enrichment Corp.
Re-elected to the Executive Committee for an additional term were James J. Howard of Northern States Power; Corbin A. McNeill Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of PECO Energy Co.; and Christian H. Poindexter of Baltimore Gas and Electric.
The newly elected members join the Executive Committee's current members:

, president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute;
Craven Crowell
, chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority;

Donald C. Hintz
, president and chief executive officer of Entergy Operations Inc.;
Erle Nye
of Texas Utilities Company;

, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Pinnacle West Capital Corp.; and
Dr. Steven R. Specker
, president of GE Nuclear Energy.
Along with Nye and Poindexter, the following people were elected as NEI officers:
