WASHINGTON—Dominion announced today that it has filed a combined construction and operating license application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a new reactor at its North Anna nuclear power plant 40 miles north of Richmond, Va. The following is a statement from the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer, Frank L. (Skip) Bowman.

“NEI congratulates Dominion for the submission of its license application for a new reactor to meet Virginia’s rapidly growing electricity needs.

 

“Dominion has projected a need for at least 4,000 megawatts of additional electricity capacity in Virginia during the next decade. Two reactors at North Anna have reliably provided baseload electricity for hundreds of thousands of Virginians, cleanly and safely, for nearly 30 years. A new reactor at North Anna is an important step to meet Virginia’s future energy needs while simultaneously protecting the environment.

“Nuclear energy represents more than 70 percent of the electricity nationwide that comes from emission-free sources. Demand nationally for reliable and clean electricity is expected to increase dramatically in the years ahead, and nuclear energy must be part of a diverse energy portfolio to meet Americans’ rapidly rising electricity consumption while decreasing greenhouse gases.
