Nuclear Energy Institute Welcomes President Obama's Approval of U.S.-U.A.E. Cooperation Pact
WASHINGTON, D.C.—President Barack Obama has approved and submitted for congressional ratification a bilateral agreement for civilian nuclear cooperation with United Arab Emirates. Following is a statement by Marvin S. Fertel, the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer.
“The nuclear energy industry welcomes President Obama’s approval of the U.S.-U.A.E. civilian nuclear cooperation agreement. The agreement demonstrates that nuclear energy’s vital role as a reliable source of carbon-free electricity is increasingly recognized around the globe. U.S. participation in transferring commercial nuclear technology to the U.A.E. will help establish a proper regulatory and non-proliferation system for U.A.E. and other nations pursuing nuclear energy technology to help meet low-carbon energy profiles.
“The sooner this agreement is finalized, the sooner that Americans can begin to benefit from the many thousands of new jobs that this agreement has the potential to create in a variety of civilian nuclear technologies spanning energy, medicine and other industrial applications.”
