U.N. Panel Recognizes Role of Nuclear Energy in Curbing Greenhouse Gases

WASHINGTON—The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change today issued its fourth in a series of reports assessing scientific, technical, and socio-economic information relevant for the understanding of climate change. This latest report recognizes the role of nuclear energy in reducing greenhouse gases. Following is a statement from Frank L. (Skip) Bowman, the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer.

“The IPCC report is significant in that it represents a global community recognition at the environmental policy level of the essential role for nuclear energy in reducing greenhouse gases. Nuclear power must play a role in combination with other sources like renewable energy if we are going to make a significant impact in reducing emissions in the energy sector. 

“Nuclear energy can also be a bridge for the transportation sector by powering the emergence of plug-in hybrid vehicles, and possibly even the long-term hydrogen transportation industry, so that there are no emissions from the power source or from the vehicle.”
