NRC Chairman Nominee Klein Has Solid Nuclear Technology, Policy Credentials
WASHINGTON—
The following is a statement by the Nuclear Energy Institute’s president and chief executive officer, Frank L. “Skip” Bowman, on the White House’s nomination of Dale E. Klein to be a commissioner on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to serve as chairman of the commission:
“Dale Klein has a broad understanding of commercial nuclear technology and policy issues that will suit him well as NRC chairman. Like Chairman Nils Diaz, he comes to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission with significant credentials in the nuclear field. Most recently, he has served as assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Chemical and Biological Defense Programs since 2001. During his five years at the Pentagon, he has overseen a large program with an annual budget of over $5 billion and 2,000 people.
“The NRC must continue to be an effective, credible regulator if the nation is to maximize nuclear energy’s role in achieving America’s economic growth and energy security. If he is confirmed by the Senate, the industry looks forward to working with Mr. Klein and the NRC to maintain the record of safety and security at nuclear power plants.”
