NEI Commends Reps. Wynn and Shimkus for Introducing Hydrogen Production Bill

WASHINGTON—U.S. Reps. Albert Wynn (D-MD) and John Shimkus (R-IL) introduced legislation (H.R. 1482) this week that provides for the research and development of advanced nuclear reactors for the production of hydrogen. The bill would allow the co-location of a hydrogen production facility next to a nuclear power plant. Wynn and Shimkus are members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The following is a statement from John Kane, NEI senior vice president of governmental affairs.

“The Nuclear Energy Institute commends Congressmen Wynn and Shimkus for introducing this important piece of legislation. As our nation advances toward a hydrogen economy, the use of clean nuclear energy to produce hydrogen is a big plus for the environment because there will be no air emissions in the production phase.

“Nuclear energy can produce hydrogen for use in vehicles and displace the use of oil in the transportation sector – just as it has done in the electricity sector in the past 30 years.

“The United States must have a diverse portfolio of energy sources to strengthen our energy security and, in turn, our national security. Because nuclear power is a key element of our nation’s energy mix, we are pleased that this legislation recognizes nuclear energy’s important role. We pledge to work with Wynn and Shimkus and others to enact this bill into law.”
