Summary
Estimated U.S. nuclear generation in March 2013 was 62.6 billion kWh, compared to 61.7 billion kWh for the same period in 2012. The average estimated capacity factor for March 2013 was 83.6 percent compared to 82.2 percent in March 2012. Total nuclear generation for the first three months of 2013 is 1.1 percent lower than the same period in 2012.
Twenty-eight nuclear units refueled or are currently refueling since the beginning of 2013 compared to 29 units that were refueling at the same time last year. Thirty-two nuclear units are scheduled to refuel this Spring compared to 30 during Spring 2012.
For the third time since 2007, Vermont Yankee ran continuously during 2012 and part of 2013 before shutting down for refueling on March 9 (a 493-day run). The unit also achieved continuous runs during 2006-2007 (547 days) and 2009-2010 (532 days).
