Nuclear Performance Monthly - April 2012

Highlights:
  • U.S. nuclear generation in April 2012 surpassed April 2011 generation by 3.8 percent, 56.6 bkWh vs. 54.5 bkWh, respectively. Year-to-date 2012 nuclear generation is 1.3 percent less than the same period in 2011.
  • The average capacity factor for the nuclear fleet for the first four months of 2012 was 86.4 percent compared to 88.3 percent for the same period in 2011.
  • Boiling water reactors outperformed pressurized water reactors for the month and year-to-date 2012 in terms of capacity factor. The 35 BWRs achieved an average capacity factor of 80.6 percent for April and 91.1 percent for the year-to date. The 69 PWRs averaged 76.3 percent and 83.7 percent capacity factors for April and year-to-date, respectively.
