AOPA Testimony, June 5, 2002 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Commissioned Report, Nuclear Security: General Aviation Is Not A Threat, Submitted into Congressional Record, U.S. Senate, Committee on Environment and Public Works Reports May 18, 2007
American Council on Science and Health, News Release, Science Panel Finds Low-Level Radiation Unlikely to Harm Health, September 23, 2005 The American Council on Science and Health finds in its recently released report, “The Health Effects of Low-Level Radiation,” that low-level radiation from natural or manmade sources is unlikely to harm human health.

For the full text of the report, see "American Council on Science and Health, The Health Effects of Low-Level Radiation, September 2005 ".

American Council on Science and Health, The Health Effects of Low-Level Radiation, September 2005 Full text of the study which finds that low-level radiation from natural or manmade sources is unlikely to harm human health. Reports May 18, 2007
Beneficial Uses of Radiation This fact sheet covers the many beneficial uses of radiation. Topics covered include: medicine; scientific research; agriculture and food production; space exploration; naval propulsion; industrial uses; and consumer products and services. Total contribution to the national economy is also detailed. Fact Sheet Jan 1, 2007
Chernobyl Accident and Its Consequences The 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine is the only accident in the history of commercial nuclear power to cause fatalities from radiation. It was the product of a severely flawed reactor design combined with human error. Key differences in U.S. reactor design, regulation and emergency preparedness make it highly unlikely that a Chernobyl-type accident could occur in the United States. Fact Sheet Apr 1, 2006
DHS Fact Sheet, Comprehensive Reviews Yield Effective Practices for Homeland Security "The Nuclear Sector was the first to participate in these reviews....While recognizing that nuclear plants are the best-protected assets of our critical infrastructure, Federal agencies and the nuclear industry recognized the value of a unified, collaborative effort to enhance the protection of these vital assets." Fact Sheet Mar 30, 2006
Deterring Terrorism: Aircraft Crash Impact Analyses Demonstrate Nuclear Power Plant's Structural Strength (EPRI Study) This independent study demonstrates through state-of-the-art computer modeling techniques that structures housing reactor fuel at U.S. nuclear power plants would protect against a release of radiation even if struck by a large commercial jetliner. The study was conducted by EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute). Reports May 18, 2007
Emergency Preparedness Near Nuclear Power Plants This fact sheet explains how energy companies develop and exercise emergency response plans to protect public health and safety near nuclear power plants. Fact Sheet Mar 12, 2008
Ensuring the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources This fact sheet shows how the NRC and the nuclear industry work together to secure the safety and security of radioactive materials used for industrial and consumer applications as well as for electric power generation. Policy Brief Dec 1, 2006
French National Academy of Medicine (Academie nationale de medecine), Energy Choices and Health (Choix energetiques et sante, recommendations) "Nuclear generating stations appear to have the lesser impact on health by kWh produced, compared to power generated by fossil fuels or even, as shown, notably, in the European Commission's ExternE Report and considering the high level of security of nuclear installations, by wind, photovoltaic cells or biomass." Reports May 18, 2007
Hastie Testimony, June 5, 2002 Donna J. Miller Hastie, Emergency Preparedness Specialist, Nuclear Power Plant Security, Written Testimony, U.S. Senate, Committee on Environment and Public Works Regulatory Information May 18, 2007
Implications of Security Force Federalization on Nuclear Power Plant Security This white paper explains why the establishment of a federal security force for nuclear power plants would actually result in less effective security than the current arrangement of a highly trained and regularly tested private security force at each plan White Paper May 18, 2007
Industry Closely Monitors, Controls Tritium at Nuclear Power Plants The nuclear energy industry is committed to operating its plants safely and to protecting the environment. A combination of plant design and systems, and employee monitoring, helps prevent unplanned radioactive releases and helps control and contain them in the event that they should occur. No public health or safety risk has resulted from tritium releases at commercial nuclear power plants. Fact Sheet Oct 24, 2007
Industry Expands Programs for Managing Nuclear Plant Materials "The industry is taking a proactive approach to identify and resolve emerging issues more effectively. An assessment is being conducted of all materials programs by an executive task force that will identify management improvements to ensure these programs are effective, and that there are no safety issues. The goal is to identify materials performance problems well in advance of a significant impact on plant operation." Reports May 18, 2007
International Nuclear Event Scale Enhances Public Communications This policy brief describes the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Nuclear Events Scale and how it complements the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approach toward nuclear power plant safety and emergency events. Policy Brief Dec 14, 2007
