Michael Flannigan is Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). He joined NEI as Vice President of Government Affairs in May of 2023. Michael leads NEI’s government affairs division which includes federal and international government functions as well as political and charity giving. Michael and the NEI government affairs team represent the industry before Congress, the executive branch, state legislatures and international government bodies and forums. He is responsible for coordinating the nuclear energy advocacy with NEI members, business, labor, environmental organizations and other key stakeholders.
He started his career on Capitol Hill working for two members of the U.S. Senate and serving as a professional staff member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. After serving in the U.S. Senate, he worked in executive corporate positions for Rio Tinto, Peabody Energy, and Bondi Partners.
Michael has broad domestic and international experience in public policy, project development, communications, and community engagement. He has managed teams that have successfully secured government approval for domestic and international projects.
He earned his BS in Political Science from the University of Oregon, and his Masters in Public Policy from Georgetown University.
