Advocacy

Who benefits from nuclear energy? Our communities. Our environment. Our health. Our economy. Aren’t they worth advocating for?

At NEI, we work to drive policies that promote the beneficial uses of nuclear energy. We take pride in our role of resolving complex technical and business issues. Here we provide accurate and timely information on important advocacy issues to inform your decision-making.

Preserve Nuclear Plants

Dozens of nuclear reactors in the United States may be at risk of closing in the next five to 10 years. Preventing unnecessary plant closures can save jobs, secure our grid and sustain progress on clean energy goals.

Make Regulations Smarter

With right-sized regulations, we can implement even safer technology and support our nuclear fleet. It’s time to embrace a new generation of nuclear fuel designs and resolve lingering issues like second license renewals, decommissioning and used nuclear fuel management.

Build New Reactors

The next generation of reactors will protect the climate, boost the economy with long-term, well-paying jobs and ensure our global leadership and national security. Government partnership is essential for small modular and advanced reactors to be licensed and commercialized quickly enough to make a difference.

Compete Globally

The global nuclear energy market offers a multibillion-dollar opportunity and direct influence over international nuclear safety and nonproliferation. Yet our ability to compete is hampered by our own system. Small steps can help us compete without compromising safety and security standards.

A Winning Strategy

The National Nuclear Energy Strategy, developed by NEI and the U.S. nuclear industry, outlines four key initiatives to guide policy.

  • PRESERVE: We must preserve the current fleet of nuclear power plants and ensure their attributes are appropriately valued at national, state and local levels.
  • SUSTAIN: We can sustain efficient operations of the existing fleet through smarter regulations.
  • INNOVATE: Innovating new nuclear technologies will help deliver a cleaner energy future.
  • THRIVE: Thriving in the global nuclear energy marketplace is essential to our country’s leadership abroad.
