Plant Operation
Ownership
In the U.S., nuclear power plants ownership is not limited to a single class of company or a specific ownership structure. This means that nuclear plants can be owned by utilities, investors, or other ownership structures that may make sense. In addition, ownership of a nuclear power plant is separate from operating or servicing the plant. The main restrictions on ownership include restrictions from foreign ownership and financial requirements.Operations
Nuclear power plants operate under supervision of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. Current plants employ hundreds of skilled workers and are required to follow detailed safety and security procedures. As mentioned above, ownership of a nuclear plant does not tie the owner to operations. Operating a nuclear plant safely and efficiently requires significant experience, which can lead to owners contracting operations to organizations with expertise in this area. As modern reactor designs seek to streamline operations, the barriers to entry for operating these plants could decrease.Back to Guide >
