This position is available at a Director or Sr. Project Manager level, dependent on years of experience. Candidates for a Senior Project Manager role will need to have a minimum of 5 years of experience including technical, regulatory, and policy expertise in the commercial nuclear industry. Candidates with additional years of experience may be considered for the Director role based on their overall experience and background.
Primary Purpose:
The Director or Sr. Project Manager, depending on background and level of experience under the general direction of the Senior Director, provides strategic direction on generic operational, technical and regulatory issues. Areas of general knowledge important for this role include nuclear power plant engineering, operation and/or nuclear regulatory affairs and oversight activities. Specific areas of responsibility are intended to cover nuclear plant operations, engineering programs, component integrity, codes and standards and materials engineering issues. The position involves developing regulatory strategies to advance issues of concern in these technical areas and supporting NEI members in resolving regulatory and compliance issues that may arise in these areas.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
This person directs and oversees the implementation of a comprehensive strategy for a range of regulatory and technical support activities.
The role is responsible for ensuring the activities are managed in an integrated manner, involving other NEI Divisions as appropriate. The incumbent is also responsible for managing and leading NEI Task Forces and Working Groups for assigned issues. The incumbent will also be requested on occasion to mentor and assist in the development of NEI project managers. The incumbent must have the capability to recognize the importance of an issue and develop an approach for managing it in accordance with NEI policies and practices.
The incumbent will have extensive interactions with Federal regulatory agencies’ and senior management and technical staff to discuss the issues for which he/she is responsible. He/she must have the ability to act effectively under pressure, understanding both the significance of those interactions and the necessary management constraints that limit those interactions and any potential commitments.
The incumbent must have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, with all disciplines and levels in NEI and with the appropriate levels of member company personnel, with a broad range of industry personnel, including owners groups and other industry organizations, with federal regulatory agencies, Congressional staff and the media. This requires the ability to analyze and understand the key elements of an issue, from both the regulator’s and the NEI members’ perspectives, in order to prioritize the activities necessary for resolving the issue. Demonstrated analytical abilities and an excellent sense of judgment are imperative to the decision-making required in this position.
The position also requires leadership skills, depending on applicant’s level of experience, and the ability to work in an efficient and consistent manner with limited direction and oversight.
The incumbent must remain flexible enough to be able to vary an approach to an issue in order to accommodate the regulatory considerations and the political and legal climates affecting an issue.
He/she must have the ability to anticipate the regulator’s actions and respond accordingly and be able to determine the most effective approaches for bringing an issue to a satisfactory closure. He/she must be able to adjust priorities in a dynamic environment to respond to NEI members’ needs and effectively close out the issues.
Job Specifications:
Director: A minimum of 15 years of experience in nuclear energy
Senior Project Manager: A minimum of 5 years of experience in nuclear energy
Knowledge:
General knowledge of nuclear and mechanical engineering, nuclear power plant engineering processes, and operation and maintenance practices within the current operating fleet. Broad knowledge of the industry as well as an understanding of nuclear-specific regulatory and engineering processes are required.
Knowledge and experience with ASME, ANS, ASTM and/or IEEE codes and standards and NEI 03-08 Materials Programs. Experience should include application of these codes in operating nuclear plants and understanding of the NRC’s endorsement processes.
Skills & Abilities:
Leadership, consensus-building, focus on nuclear safety, and communicating orally and in writing are all critical.
In addition to the above technical and regulatory skills above, the applicant must have the ability to successfully engage individuals at all levels of an organization and communicate issues succinctly with detail appropriate to the audience, both orally and in writing. He/she must be skilled in persuasion and resolution of conflicts and problems with the ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with others inside or outside of the organization who can provide information, assistance and support. Problem solving should entail the use of a logical and systematic approach that considers the market and industry trends, the needs of our members.
Education:
B.S. in engineering discipline or related technical degree.
Pay Range:
For individuals who reside in the Washington, DC metro area, the salary range for the Senior Project Manager position is $158,846 to $238,269, and the salary range for the Director position is $191,360 to $287,040.
Typically, new hires are brought into the organization at a salary between the minimum and midpoint of the range, depending on factors such as qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted salary for the position.
