Senior Accountant

Primary Purpose:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization’s financial records. This role leads key aspects of the monthly and annual close process, prepares financial analyses, maintains the general ledger, and reconciles accounts. The Senior Accountant also supports financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and internal controls, and oversees accounts receivable functions, including billing, collections, and revenue tracking. This position serves as a resource to the finance team and works with departments across the organization to ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational policies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze general ledger accounts and investigate unusual variances.
  • Maintain responsibility for assigned balance sheet accounts
  • Oversee accounts receivable processes, including invoicing, cash application, and reconciliation of AR subledger to the general ledger.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging, follow up on outstanding balances, and coordinate collection efforts to ensure timely receipt of payments.
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP and organizational policies.
  • Resolve billing discrepancies and customer account issues in collaboration with internal departments.
  • Support annual financial statement audits and preparation of audit schedules, including AR-related documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, organizational policies, and internal controls while recommending process improvements.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes using the organization's ERP system.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:

  • Minimum of five to eight years progressive accounting experience.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred. 
  • Experience with NetSuite or comparable ERP systems preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Specific knowledge of accounts receivables and associated responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of an automated accounting system, preferably NetSuite
  • Good working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. CPA certification or active pursuit of CPA preferred. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Compensation

For employees who live in the Washington, DC metro area, the salary range for this position is: $95,200 - $142,800 annually. Typically, new hires are brought into the organization between the minimum and midpoint of the range, depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted salary for the role.
