Job Description:
This position is available at a Senior Project Manager, or Technical Advisor level, dependent on years of experience. Candidates for a Senior Project Manager role will need to have a minimum of 5 years of experience including technical, regulatory, and policy expertise in the commercial nuclear industry. Candidates with additional years of experience may be considered for the Technical Advisor role based on their overall experience and background.
Primary Purpose:
- Develop and manage NEI projects designed to improve the nuclear energy industry’s prospects for deploying new nuclear power plants, including advanced LWRs, SMRs, non-LWRs, and micro-reactors.
- Develop NEI regulatory and policy positions to ensure a supportive commercial environment for the deployment of new nuclear plants.
- Interface with NEI members, the government, industry organizations, and NGOs on new nuclear initiatives and issues.
- Serve as NEI expert for, and provide leadership within NEI and the industry, on new nuclear initiatives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is primarily accountable for the technical expertise, management, and coordination of pertinent activities and information concerning New Nuclear issues being addressed by NEI. Situations may arise where this position may be assigned to coordinate, or participate with, other NEI staff members on a team to address an issue with the objective of bringing the issue to an acceptable resolution. This position is part of a team of new nuclear experts that lead the organization and industry in promoting the conditions necessary for successful new nuclear deployment to meet climate, energy, environmental, economic and national security goals. The incumbent has a responsibility to keep his or her Senior Director informed of the status of the respective issues.
Responsibilities include any projects, as assigned, within the range of issues that are the responsibility of the New Nuclear Department in the Technical and Regulatory Services Division. Specific responsibilities include leading regulatory topics of NRC oversight during construction and operations, new reactor siting, and alternative deployment models.
This position is responsible for developing an accurate definition of the issue; for providing analysis to NEI management for their determination if there is a generic industry problem, and providing the necessary information for communication to NEI members. He/she must also possess the ability for strategic planning in his/her area of responsibility.
This position requires careful coordination of industry activities related to specific issues, including coordination with NEI members, with owners’ groups, and with other industry organizations. Routine interaction with the NRC, and other government agencies under the direction of the Senior Director, are also required to maintain effective communication on the issues and plans for resolution. Additionally, he/she must have the ability to interact with senior managers of NEI’s member organizations.
The incumbent is required to properly utilize and coordinate NEI Working Groups and Issue Task Forces, as well as any other applicable industry sponsored committee or activity. He/she may be required to chair an Issue Task Force or other NEI sponsored meeting.
This requires the ability to analyze and understand the components of an issue, from both NEI members' and external stakeholders’ perspectives, in order to prioritize the activities necessary for resolving the issue. Analytical abilities and an excellent sense of judgement are imperative to the decision-making required in this position. The incumbent is expected to work independently with light supervision.
Job Specifications:
Senior Project Manager: Minimum 5 years of nuclear energy experience.
Technical Advisor: A minimum of 15 years of nuclear energy experience.
Nuclear energy experience is preferably at a utility, NSSS vendor or government. There is a preference for experience related to new reactor licensing in the U.S, use of IAEA safety standards, engagement with the Department of Defense in their use of nuclear energy, and the development of training programs. The incumbent is expected to have the ability to obtain a Security Clearance at the Secret Level or greater.
Knowledge:
In addition to the technical, business, organizational and managerial skills identified above, the incumbent must possess an understanding of nuclear regulation, preferably as it relates new reactors. He/She should be knowledgeable of the principles of government incentives and programs for the commercialization of new reactors. Finally, although detailed legal knowledge is not required, he/she should have an understanding of the principles associated with new reactor technology development.

Pay Range:
For individuals who reside in the Washington, DC metro area, the salary range for the Senior Project Manager position is $158,846 to $238,269, and the salary range for the Technical Advisor position is $191,360 to $287,040.
Typically, new hires are brought into the organization at a salary between the minimum and midpoint of the range, depending on factors such as qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted salary for the position.
