Washington, D.C.—The national associations representing the wind, solar, hydropower and battery storage industries announced at the American Wind Energy Association's Cleanpower 2020 conference the ability of those carbon-free electricity generation sources to power 50 percent of the grid by 2030. The following statement can be attributed to Maria Korsnick, president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute.

“The announcement made during the Cleanpower annual conference shows the valuable contribution of renewables and storage to help us mitigate against a changing climate. This provides an affirmation of the important role of nuclear carbon-free energy—currently 20 percent of the nation’s power generation—in providing the always-on carbon-free generation to complement wind, hydro and solar to reach a reliable, affordable, emissions-free electric system.

"We need to act now to preserve the existing nuclear fleet and prevent the loss of existing carbon-free energy. We must invest in all carbon-free sources of electricity—including new nuclear technologies—if we are going to transform our power system and address the existential crisis facing our planet.”
