Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and noted philanthropist, will speak at the Nuclear Energy Assembly (NEA), the industry’s three-day virtual conference, on June 9. Gates will share how advanced nuclear technology—such as the Natrium advanced reactor his company TerraPower is developing with GE Hitachi—will be essential for establishing a carbon-free economy.

We are at a pivotal moment in the effort to protect the climate. With outstanding performance from America’s 93 reactors and exciting innovations on the horizon, nuclear energy is poised to be the very foundation of the effort to decarbonize the electricity sector and beyond.

“Without innovation, we will not solve climate change,” Gates told CBS’ “60 Minutes” earlier this year. “We won’t even come close.”

Gates joins an agenda of policymakers, climate advocates and innovators at this year’s NEA, which runs from June 7-9. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm will share the Biden administration's priorities for a clean energy transformation as part of larger efforts to decarbonize the economy. Other speakers throughout the event include astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi; Sarah Greenberger of the Audubon Society; Leah Stokes of University of California, Santa Barbara; Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency; Paul McNeal of The Crypto Curator; and more.

Over the course of these three days, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with industry, regulatory and public policy leaders who are shaping the nuclear industry today and the promise of tomorrow.

NEA kicks off on June 7 with the theme of “Achieving Our Potential.” These sessions will explore why utilities are implementing a mix of nuclear, wind and solar to reduce carbon emissions; a discussion with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Christopher Hanson; and a celebration of innovation within the industry through the Top Innovative Practice Awards.

The second day takes on advocacy and policy with the theme of “Advancing Solutions.” Day Two features panels discussing the growing recognition of nuclear energy in climate policy proposals, how the Biden administration is approaching climate change and how environmental justice is being integrated into energy policy.

The third and final day of NEA highlights nuclear innovation with the theme of “Reaching Beyond”, looking at efforts to commercialize advanced reactors as a solution to climate change and nuclear’s role in cryptocurrency as well as global opportunities for nuclear energy.
