Statement from Doug True, chief nuclear officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute:
“Following a May 23 Executive Order, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently reviewing processes to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies, as well as a wholesale revision of NRC’s regulations and guidance.
“NEI, on behalf of the U.S. commercial nuclear industry, submitted today recommendations to the NRC detailing the most impactful reforms needed to modernize regulations in a deployment-oriented, risk-informed, and performance-based approach while continuing to protect public health and safety.
“For the past decade, NEI has called for significant reform of the NRC to enable the growth of nuclear energy in the United States while maintaining a steadfast commitment to protecting public health and safety. There is an urgent need for an increase in nuclear generation to provide the U.S. with a reliable, clean and affordable energy system. And the path for that necessary growth runs through the NRC.
“The bipartisan ADVANCE Act successfully spurred change at the NRC, and NRC has demonstrated that safety can be ensured far more efficiently for both the operating fleet and for advanced nuclear technologies. The Executive Order will continue to drive change allowing the U.S. to maintain the world standard for safe nuclear operations while advancing the expansion of nuclear technology at home and abroad.”
