From cooling tower smoke to glowing green goo, myths about nuclear energy can get pretty scary. This Halloween, we’re swapping out nuclear tricks for nuclear treats to show you that there’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to America’s largest source of clean energy.
Trick: We don’t need nuclear energy, it’s outdated. We should be focusing on renewables.
Treat: Nuclear is far from being a thing of the past. New nuclear is popping up across the U.S., from the first advanced reactors in the U.S. at Georgia’s Plant Vogtle to the recently announced plans for Cascade Advanced Energy Facility in Washington. And it’s not just here at home – demand for nuclear is growing all around the world. Plus, nuclear is the only clean energy source that operates 24/7/365. If the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, relying only on renewables could get scary!
Trick: Nuclear energy isn’t good for our climate – just look at the smoke coming from the cooling towers!
Treat: Nuclear cooling towers emit water vapor – no smoke, and no carbon emissions, either! While nuclear hasn’t always been embraced by the climate-conscious set, the tide is beginning to shift. Nuclear also had a notable presence at this year’s New York Climate Week and is a crucial player in meeting our climate goals.
Trick: Nuclear energy isn’t safe.
Treat: Not even close! Nuclear power is among the most closely regulated and well-engineered energy sources we have. Nuclear plants are built with layers of safety systems that can activate within seconds, and thick concrete and steel containment structures keep everything safely inside. It’s that kind of built-in redundancy and rigorous oversight that makes nuclear far safer than people realize. Nuclear plants are also welcome additions to many communities across the U.S., providing jobs and clean energy to local homes and businesses.
Trick: But what about the waste?
Treat: We can thank The Simpsons for the ever-popular myths about waste. While glowing green goo might sound like a cool Halloween decoration, that image is far from the truth when it comes to nuclear waste. In reality, spent nuclear fuel (aka “waste”) is small, solid, and stored safely. In fact, one pellet of spent fuel is about the size of a gummy bear – reach into your trick-or-treat bag for an example!
Trick: You can only get a job in nuclear if you’re a nuclear engineer.
Treat: While engineers are an important part of the nuclear workforce, they’re far from being the only ones at the table! The nuclear industry needs all kinds of minds and skill sets in order to thrive. From plant operation and security to HR and marketing, there’s a nuclear energy career for everyone.
Don’t get fooled by the nuclear tricks this Halloween – hand out a nuclear treat instead!
