National, energy and climate security have converged in favor of nuclear power across Europe. The United Kingdom and the Netherlands have unveiled big plans for nuclear expansion, and there is ample opportunity for the U.S. nuclear supply chain to showcase the industry’s leadership in innovation, technology, and supply chain excellence as each country approaches critical decisions about its international partners for planned new nuclear plants.
Engage directly with key government officials and industry stakeholders responsible for advancing nuclear energy programs in the UK and the Netherlands and explore partnership and investment opportunities in these critical European markets.
This trade mission is being conducted in close partnership with the U.S. Departments of Energy, Commerce, and State, as well as the respective ministries of the UK and the Netherlands which oversee each nation’s ambitious nuclear energy plans and projects.
United Kingdom
March 30 – April 2
The United Kingdom currently operates 9 reactors but all except one of these plants are due to reach the end of their operating life by 2030. Despite this, the government has ambitious plans to increase nuclear capacity in the UK from around 6 GW to up to 24 GW by 2050. New reactors have been proposed at various sites and the UK and are at different stages of development including large reactors at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, as well as SMRs. Final decisions on government funding related Great British Nuclear’ s SMR competition are expected in June of this year.
Netherlands
April 3
The Netherlands has one nuclear reactor generating a small amount of its electricity. A previous decision to phase out nuclear power was reversed, and the Dutch government is now putting money and concrete timelines behind a promise to commission four large new nuclear reactors starting in 2035, and to more broadly support nuclear energy. The Netherlands plans to significantly expand its nuclear energy capacity by building two new nuclear power plants at the Borssele site with the goal of generating between 9-13% of the country's electricity through nuclear power; additionally, they intend to extend the lifespan of their existing Borssele reactor beyond its original decommissioning date of 2033. SMRs could also play an important role in the Dutch energy transition.
