Energy Department Selects Nuclear Power Plants for Hydrogen Demos

Press Statement
Beyond Electricity

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced funding to support proposed demonstration projects for hydrogen production at three U.S. commercial nuclear power plants operated by Arizona Public Service, First Energy Solutions and Xcel Energy. In response to the announcement, the following is a statement from John Kotek, vice president of policy development and public affairs at NEI:

“We applaud and thank the Energy Department for supporting these projects to demonstrate how nuclear power can efficiently produce hydrogen without carbon emissions

“These hydrogen demonstrations will help pave the way for a wide range of new applications for nuclear energy beyond generating electricity, including the production of heat for industrial processes, polymers and plastics, and even alternative fuels for transportation. Using carbon-free nuclear energy to produce hydrogen will help decarbonize industrial products that currently rely on fossil fuels and will enable us to attack climate change on new fronts.”
