Three Mile Island Closure Signals More Recognition Needed for Leading Source of Clean

Press Statement
Preserve Nuclear Plants

Washington, D.C.—Today, Exelon Generation announced that Three Mile Island Unit 1 will shut down by Sept. 30, 2019. The following statement can be attributed to Maria Korsnick, president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute.

“Regrettably, time has run out for Pennsylvania to save Three Mile Island Unit 1, one of the state’s largest sources of clean energy. Despite attempts by the industry, state and local stakeholders, the trades and residents to save the station, Three Mile Island Unit 1 will prematurely retire as a result of a flawed and distorted energy market that fails to value the attributes of nuclear power.

“The shutdown will lead to the loss of hundreds of Pennsylvania jobs, more than $1 million in taxes annually to the community, and more than 7 million megawatt-hours of carbon-free energy, enough to power 800,000 homes.

“Our nation is stronger and more resilient with nuclear in its energy portfolio, but additional nuclear plants are facing a similar fate as Three Mile Island. It’s in our nation’s best interest for lawmakers both in state capitals and Washington to push for market solutions and polices that value all clean energy sources, or face the economic and environmental consequences for generations to come.”
