Washington, D.C.—Statement from Maria Korsnick, president and chief executive officer of Nuclear Energy Institute:
"We are pleased to see the administration's supplemental request includes recommended funding to improve long-term, domestic enrichment capabilities for low-enriched uranium (LEU) and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). We encourage Congress to pass the $2.2 billion in funding requested to strengthen U.S. energy independence by establishing domestic production of HALEU and LEU used in the nation’s current nuclear facilities and the next generation of reactors.
“President Biden's request demonstrates continued recognition that nuclear power plays a vital role in our nation's future clean energy economy. Investment in domestic fuel cycle capabilities would have far-reaching impact on the entire U.S. nuclear industry, creating a competitive market at home and strengthening national security.
“The U.S. commercial nuclear industry is committed to eliminating the import of uranium and related conversion and enrichment services from the Russian Federation, but a reliable domestic fuel supply is imperative to making that happen. This commitment will require continued financial investment and federal legislation. We support the Biden administration's request and are eager to continue working with Congress to address our nuclear fuel cycle challenges.”
