Washington, D.C.—Statement from Maria Korsnick, president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute, on the commercial operation of Plant Vogtle Unit 3:

“The commercial operation of Vogtle Unit 3 marks a significant achievement for the U.S. nuclear energy industry and a milestone in advancing global clean and reliable energy solutions. We are thrilled to witness the successful deployment of this Westinghouse AP1000 advanced reactor, which is helping to shape the energy landscape of the future.

With its innovative technology and rigorous safety measures, Vogtle Unit 3 is generating approximately 1,100 megawatts of safe, reliable and carbon-free energy, powering an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses without emitting harmful air pollutants. Beyond clean electricity generation, the unit is also helping to create well-paying jobs – stimulating local economies and supporting community development.

Vogtle Unit 3 is the first advanced reactor technology to come online in the United States and paves the way for future nuclear projects. It exemplifies the industry’s commitment to a zero-carbon future, contributing to global efforts to combat a changing climate and energy security. We extend our congratulations to Southern Company, Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power, Westinghouse, Bechtel, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power, Dalton Utilities, building trade unions and the thousands of skilled men and women involved in the successful construction and deployment of Vogtle Unit 3.”
