NEI’s Policy Proposals to Aid States Wanting New Nuclear

What is the common thread connecting more than two dozen state capitals this year? It was an incredible curiosity for reliable, carbon-free nuclear energy. As we turn to 2023 and determine the midterm election results, policymakers are consistently asking, “How can we better position our state to take advantage of nuclear energy’s benefits?” The appetite for information is clear, and the Nuclear Energy Institute is publishing a menu of different proposals to help lawmakers support advanced reactor technology.

No two states’ political dynamics are alike, and our proposals reflect the unique landscape in each capital. They run the spectrum from small legislative lifts to big asks. However, each proposal is grounded in the fact that its implementation will encourage carbon-free nuclear development as we enter an uncertain energy transition.

The proposals are broken into three broad categories, and each category contains an array of ideas that contribute to the growing conversation around nuclear energy.

  • Utilizing nuclear energy to achieve policy goals
  • Supporting advanced reactor deployment
  • Understanding of the benefits of advanced nuclear technologies

If your state believes that workforce development is a primary concern, you will need a number of different proposals to support the workforce pipeline and sustaining the highest-paid energy workforce in America—nuclear energy—should be front of mind.

Is your state looking to take advantage of federal hydrogen dollars? We’ve got you covered—an increasing number of states are discovering the natural partnership between hydrogen and nuclear energy.

We’ve also proposed resolutions that may seem like light lifts, but they are an important part of spotlighting nuclear energy’s critical importance to our electrical grid.

Of course, these are just a few suggestions included in our recent policy proposals, which provide a much deeper exploration of what you can take back to your state.
