Nuclear 101

Nuclear energy was central this year in conversations surrounding energy security, climate resilience, ESG, and the clean energy transition. It was spotlighted on many a global stage and highlighted as a climate solution. As we look toward what the next year holds for our world and our communities, here are some of the articles that caught your attention this past year.

  1. Ask an Expert: Nuclear’s World-Class Safety Standards
This year’s top article was an interview about safety with NEI’s John Kotek. NEI’s Ask an Expert series delves into important issues with our experts. Nuclear energy isn’t always recognized for the fact that it has world-class safety standards, although studies have shown it to be one of the safest forms of energy. Give it a watch if you haven’t already and subscribe to our YouTube channel!

  2. Nuclear at the Center of “The Biggest Step Forward on Climate Ever”
There were many big legislative moments in 2022, but the largest for climate was the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The provisions included in the legislation will allow our existing nuclear plants to continue providing carbon-free energy and high-paying jobs, as well as encourage the deployment of advanced reactors. Stay tuned for an upcoming Ask an Expert on what exactly the IRA means for the nuclear energy industry and our nation’s climate goals.

  3. States Pursue Nuclear as Energy Transition Approaches
There weren’t just wins at the federal level this year—we also saw momentum for nuclear energy in the states. 2022 turned out to be an unprecedented year for smart energy policy. Nuclear energy was recognized in state legislation across the country, and Diablo Canyon and its ability to produce clean energy for the people of California was saved.  Since we’re seeing an incoming class of new and returning state policymakers, NEI published policy proposals to aid states wanting new nuclear.

  4. Nuclear Needs Small Amounts of Land to Deliver Big Amounts of Electricity
One of nuclear’s most unique attributes, which is often overlooked, is that it uses a fraction of the land wind and solar need to create clean energy. This is part of what makes a nuclear energy plant a good neighbor. Check out the data and graphs in the article!

  5. How is Nuclear a Solution to the IPCC's Latest Findings?
The research done by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading authority on climate research, informs our approach to the climate crisis. This IPCC report joined a growing list of domestic and international policy frameworks that underscore the essential role nuclear energy will play in decarbonization by providing reliable, affordable carbon-free energy 24/7/365.

Tune in next week for a look back at what the nuclear industry accomplished in 2022 and stay tuned to hear our predictions of what’s to come in 2023.
